Young Adult Coverage

Coverage for Your Young Adult

As your child becomes an adult, their health coverage options may change. NYSHIP offers several ways for young adults to stay covered — depending on their age, marital status and other insurance eligibility.

Coverage Options

Dependent Coverage (Up to Age 26)

Your child can stay on your NYSHIP coverage until the end of the month they turn 26.

  • If you have Family coverage, you can add them at no additional premium cost.
  • If you have Individual coverage, you must switch to Family coverage.
  • Your child will be enrolled in the same plan option you have.

COBRA Continuation of Coverage

When your child turns 26 and loses dependent coverage, they may continue coverage for up to 36 months under COBRA

  • Enrollment must occur within 60 days.
  • The young adult pays 100% of the premium plus a 2% administrative fee.
  • Coverage stays in the same plan option.
  • Coverage may end early if premiums are not paid or Medicare eligibility occurs.

Young Adult Option (YAO)

The Young Adult Option allows eligible young adults to buy their own NYSHIP coverage.

Eligibility requirements:

  • Under age 30
  • Unmarried
  • Not eligible for employer-sponsored health insurance
  • Not covered by Medicare
  • Living or working within the plan's service area

Important:

  • No employer contribution; the young adult pays 100% of the premium
  • Dental and vision benefits are not included under YAO (except certain SEHP enrollees)
  • Parent must remain enrolled in NYSHIP

Enrollment must occur within 60 days of turning 26 or losing other qualifying coverage.

Dental and Vision Coverage

If your child is under 26, you may enroll them in the New York State Dental Plan and/or the New York State Vision Plan.

Dental and vision benefits are not included in the Young Adult Option but may be available under COBRA.
